Self-exclusion, limits and taking a break: the practical guide
Every control described here is switched on inside the operator's account area or, in Italy, through the state register. Nothing on this page can activate anything — we describe the route, you walk it.
Start here: which tool matches which problem
Four situations, four different answers. If the budget keeps slipping, you want a deposit limit. If winnings keep getting recycled until the session ends at zero, you want a loss limit. If the evening disappears rather than the money, you want a session cap or a reality check. If play has stopped being enjoyable, you want a break — short first, permanent only if the short one does not hold.
Picking the lightest tool that actually addresses the problem is not weakness; it is what makes the tool survive contact with a bad week. A limit that is set honestly and left alone does more work than a dramatic gesture reversed three days later.
How to set deposit limit rules that hold
A deposit limit caps the money entering the account over a day, a week or a month. In the account menu the option is normally labelled "set deposit limit" and it sits under responsible gambling or account settings; choosing a period and a figure takes under a minute. The limit belongs to the account rather than to a card or a wallet, so switching payment method does not get around it.
Changes are treated asymmetrically on purpose. Lowering a limit, or setting one for the first time, applies immediately, because nobody should have to wait in order to spend less. Raising one is held back for a cooling period — often around 24 hours, longer under some regulators — so the decision has to outlive the mood that produced it. While the request is pending it can usually still be cancelled, and an account left alone simply keeps the old ceiling.
Pick the number by working backwards from what the month can absorb, then divide. A figure chosen after a losing session is almost always wrong in one direction or the other.
Loss limits, wager caps and session reminders
A loss limit counts the net result over a period rather than the money paid in, which closes the gap that a deposit cap leaves open: a balance that keeps being won back and staked again can run for hours without a single new deposit. A wager limit goes further still and caps total turnover regardless of outcome.
Session tools deal with time instead. A session limit ends play after an agreed number of minutes. A reality check interrupts nothing and simply displays elapsed time and net position every thirty or sixty minutes, leaving the decision with the player. Most accounts allow several of these to run in parallel, and combining a modest deposit cap with a reality check is the standard sensible starting point.
Timeout: how to take a break without closing the account
A timeout is a short break of a length fixed in advance — commonly a day, a week or a month depending on the operator. While it runs the cashier refuses deposits, the games are locked and promotional email should stop, but the account itself survives and at most operators a withdrawable balance can still be paid out.
This is the right tool when you want to take a break rather than end the relationship: after a run of bad sessions, during a stressful month, or simply to find out whether the itch is real. It cannot be lifted early on request, which is what makes it worth anything at all. Regulators sometimes call the same pause a cooling off period; the mechanics are identical whatever the account menu calls it.
How to self-exclude, step by step
Self-exclusion is the heavy instrument: months or years rather than days, access closed rather than paused. Here is how to self-exclude at operator level, in the order the screens appear.
- Log in and open Account settings, then the Responsible gambling section.
- Choose Self-exclusion rather than the timeout option next to it — they are different controls and the wording is deliberately similar.
- Pick the period. Operators typically offer six months, one year, five years or an indefinite closure; indefinite means exactly that.
- Withdraw any real-money balance first if you can. Cash is normally returned, but bonuses, free spins and unfinished wagering progress are forfeited and do not come back.
- Confirm. The block starts immediately, and support cannot reverse it however reasonable the reason sounds.
- When the period ends the account does not reopen by itself: a deliberate request is required, and there is often a further waiting period before it takes effect.
The Italian route: RUA, the single register of self-excluded players
Closing one account leaves every other site open, which is why Italy operates a state-level answer. ADM maintains the Registro Unico degli Autoesclusi (RUA): a single register that applies simultaneously to every operator holding an Italian remote gaming concession. Once you appear in it, those operators must refuse registration and block existing accounts — one request instead of twenty.
The request is submitted through any concessionaire's site, through the ADM procedure with a digital identity such as SPID or CIE, or in person with an identity document. The periods available are 30, 60 or 90 days, or an indefinite exclusion; the indefinite option can only be revoked after at least six months have passed and requires an explicit request, which then takes effect after a further waiting period rather than instantly.
Two limits are worth knowing in advance. RUA covers ADM-licensed operators, so a site without an Italian concession is outside its reach entirely — one more practical reason to check the register of concessionaires before opening any account, as described on our about us page. And it covers gambling, not payments: pairing it with a card-level gambling block in your banking app closes the obvious workaround.
What happens to money, bonuses and marketing
Real funds are normally returned to the player through the last used payment method, subject to verification being complete — which is a good argument for finishing KYC before you ever need this page. Active bonuses and wagering progress are written off. Marketing must stop: an operator that keeps sending offers to a self-excluded address is breaching its own licence conditions, and that is a reportable failure rather than an annoyance.
Opening a second account during an exclusion is the one move to avoid entirely. Duplicate accounts are detected at verification, closed, and the balance is voided under the terms — a temporary decision turned into a permanent loss.
Free help and blocking software
Tools inside the account are only half of it. In Italy the ADM freephone line 800 558 822 is answered anonymously, giocaresponsabile.it runs a helpline and chat with referral to local services, and AND — Azzardo e Nuove Dipendenze works with clinicians and families; Ser.D addiction services are available free through the national health service. None of them sells anything.
On the technical side, most Italian banks can block gambling transactions on a card from inside their own app, and free software such as BetBlocker covers a phone or an entire home network. Telling one person you trust makes a limit far harder to undo quietly, and that low-tech step outperforms most of the software.
